Congratulations to Nadia Woodman in Year 7 who won the House Competition to design the School Christmas Card this year.
For the first time this year Marlwood will be only sending cards digitally to reduce our carbon footprint.
CELEBRATION
OF SUCCESS EVENING
We had a fantastic evening on Thursday 1st December at our Celebration of Success event. The evening kicked off with a bang when the fantastic Marlwood Samba Band treated us all to the Batucada Fanfare. Year 13 House Captains guided us through the evening and we were treated to music from soloist , Chloe Gould who sang ‘On My Own’ from Les Misérables by Claude-Michel Schönberg and from soloist – Calvin Preston, who played Etude No.17 by Fernando Sor. We were then played out by our school band ‘No Backstory’ who played Anything and Everything.
Of course
the main event of the evening was the prize giving. Recipients were called onto the stage by
Charles Reed, Deputy Headteacher, and a long procession of students, present
and past, came to receive their prize.
Over 200 prizes were awarded for attainment/progress in subject areas,
100% attendance and community contribution at Marlwood School. A huge congratulations to all the winners,
whether you were able to attend or not.

VISIT BY AN
OLYMPIAN
OLYMPIC medal
winner Sally Conway has paid a visit to Marlwood today to speak about her
triumph in Rio, winning a bronze medal for Great Britain in Judo.
The
29-year-old judo star, a former student, returned to the school and spoke
passionately to students about her career, and what it was like to take part in
two Olympic Games.
Sally
commented that “It seems so strange to be back here,” she said. “But at the
same time, it feels like I have never left.”
Students and
staff were left inspired after Sally’s visit.

CONSULTATION 1 – 17TH NOVEMBER 2016
Parent
Consultation 1 took place last Thursday, 17th November. The event was well attended and there was a
positive atmosphere around the school as appointments took place. Feedback from staff, parents and students has
also been good.

New Year 7
students have been enjoying a new way of learning at Marlwood School. Interest has been such that the new learning
space called ‘The Hive’ has been featured in the local paper, the Gazette.

OPEN DAYS AND
SCHOOL TOURS
October has been a
busy month at Marlwood, with a very well attended Open Evening on October 6th,
followed by 2 weeks of Open Mornings, which we have had to extend into this
week due to popularity. Thank you to
all prospective pupils and parents who have attended and all the positive feedback
you have given us. A BIG thank you, of
course, goes to the Marlwood School students who have acted as tour guides for
these events.
ACCELERATED READER
We have seen a busy week in the Learning Resource Centre this week, with Year 7 going from strength to strength with the Accelerated Reader Programme.
In assembly on Monday, Daniel Tsoucalas, Stanley Willmott, George Shrimpton and Tom Claridge were all awarded their certificates as they became Word Millionaires. Laura Evans was awarded her certificate for 2 million words.
7A have also achieved their second class prize, as they have read 10 million words since the beginning of term!
7C will receive a certificate for a new school record - the earliest ALL members of a class have taken an Accelerated Reader quiz. Term 1, Week 4
I am looking forward to presenting the certificates to 7A and 7C in the near future for their fantastic achievements.

I am
delighted to announce that I have had the pleasure of awarding Mr Mason’s class
with the class prize for reading 5 million Words within the first 3 weeks of
Term 1. This is the earliest a class has
ever been presented this prize.
I also had
the pleasure of awarding Laura Evans in Year 7 her Word Millionaire Badge; this
is the earliest a Year 7 student has ever been awarded this.

SCARY TALES
Sixteen of
our Year 8-9 students have done incredibly well in a "YOUNG WRITERS"
competition. They had to write a very
short scary story and the challenge was to write well but concisely. The prize
is inclusion in a published book, "Spine Chillers -Grave Tales", a
copy of which will go to the British Library.
Well done to all students involved.
ACCELERATED READER
Year 7s
celebrated the end of a terrific year for Accelerated Reader on Wednesday. They have been working together to read as
many words as they can, with each 5 million words earning them a class
prize. There has obviously been some
extra effort towards the end of this school year as 7A were presented with
their prize for reaching 10 million words and 7C received their prize
(equalling the school record) for 20 million words read since September. It was a pleasure to present Caleb Jefferis with a certificate marking his phenomenal achievement of reading 7,096,605 words since September (98 books) and therefore taking the title for another school record. He was presented with a bronze Word Millionaire badge for this achievement. Four new millionaires were presented with their badges, namely Jimi Bennett, Abigail Bridgewater, Maisie Harrison and Samuel Kitson. Samuel received a bronze badge for becoming a Word Millionaire in two consecutive years.
Megan Handover, Jamie Reid and Samantha Drake each received certificates for making in excess of 3 years progress in their reading age over this school year.
Samuel Kitson, Annabelle Leicester and Abigail Bridgewater (all 12 years old) each received certificates for attaining the highest reading age measured on the scheme, namely 16 years and 6 months. This brings the total number of students in KS3 reading at 16 years and 6 months to 30 - another school record this year.
Throughout the school certificates were also handed out to students in years 8 and 9. In all 25 students achieved Millionaire status this year, 12 of them coming from Year 7. A staggering 3,826 books have been quizzed in school since September, amounting to 138,790,843 words!

Championship Day
The yellow
ribbons have been taken off the House Championship Cup today ready for new
ribbons to be attached when the winning House has been announced.
Students
gathered in the hall at lunchtime today to review the competitions which have
taken place this year to find the winning House. The atmosphere was electric and the noise of
500+ chanting students was deafening to say the least.
I was
pleased to announce that Berkeley are the winning House for academic year 2015/2016
and all the members of Berkeley House are now enjoying the fun fair set up on
the field as their reward.

YEAR 10
WORK EXPERIENCE
Whilst our
younger students were on Enrichment Days, our Year 10 students were gaining first-hand
experience of the world of work and taking up placements within the wider
community last week. Many worked in areas to
support their career choices further down the line, whilst others explored new
skills and ideas which may help their subject choices later. We are very grateful to business partners who
invested their time and experience in our students.
We have
had positive feedback from business, of which some examples are:
“I am writing to let you know that Charlie was
an absolute asset to your school! She was fantastic and fitted in to the team
like a dream, it is very rare to find a 15 year old as switched on and willing
to work as hard as she did. Although she was only with us for a short period of
time she will be sorely missed and the only thing we regret is that she doesn’t
live closer.
We hope Charlie all the best for the
future and that if she ever needs a job we would happily take her on.”
“Megan was an absolute delight and a
pleasure to work with. She was so
enthusiastic and loved working with the many artists - who gave her lots of
tips. She certainly grew in confidence
as the week went on and came in for an extra day, on the Thursday, to work with
our photographer. She produced some
great photos, which I have managed to email to her school account so that she
can use them for a project at school. She is always welcome back and we hope to
see her at our future Young@Art workshops.
We look forward to welcoming any of your students in the future and hope
to hear from both the school and Megan soon.”

ARTS WEEK
AT CHRIST THE KING PRIMARY SCHOOL, THORNBURY
Marlwood
students have been helping younger students with their Art Week at Christ the
King Primary School in Thornbury.
Staff and
students from Marlwood gave learners opportunities to write their own lyrics
and dancing lessons. Also some students
worked with the Marlwood Samba Band, whilst others learnt about stage costumes
and make-up.
Lots of
fun and learning took place and both students and staff from Marlwood really
enjoyed their time supporting the younger students at Christ the King.

THORNBURY
CARNIVAL
The sun
shone on Saturday, 2nd July as over 9,000 people flocked to
Thornbury to watch the carnival procession and then enjoy time at the Munday
Playing Fields.
Students
and staff from the PEPA faculty wowed the crowd with music from the popular Samba
Band.

YEAR 9 SKILLS
SHOW AT UWE
Year 9 students
visited the Skills show at UWE on Tuesday 5th July. The
students really enjoyed themselves with lots of interactive and hands on
exhibitions and activities from a variety of employers and training
institutions. Feedback from students
and staff was very positive that this was an excellent learning experience.
FOUNDER’S
DAY – THANK YOU TO PERFORMERS
Last week
Year 7 and Year 13 students, the youngest and oldest at Marlwood School
travelled to St Mary’s Church to celebrate Founder’s Day.
The
congregation were treated to readings from Samuel Kitson and Liberty Lessiter
from Year 7 and also addressed by the School Captains Devini De Alwis, Thom Harris
Lee, Ella Cottle and Dominic Webb.
We also
had musical interludes from Liam Green and Emily Draper singing Any Dream will
Do (Lloyd-Webber) and If You Wait (London Grammar) was sung by Ella Cottle. Also Emily Davies, Grace Down, Jenna Nunn,
Larragh Nunn and Jessie Smale played Colours of the Wind from Pocahontas (Alan
Schwartz) on their flutes accompanied by Mr Humphries.

CONSULTATION EVENT 3
Thursday
23rd June
We have started
preparing for the third of our Parent Consultation events. The first event in November 2015 was very
successful with the feedback from parents overwhelmingly positive and
supportive.
As we have
listened to parent, staff and student feedback, you will see some subtle
changes compared to the first and second event.
As we move
towards the next meeting the priority will be ensuring that our students have
made progress as learners and in their levels/grades. To help them with this we would ask that you
continue to check with them to ensure they are working within the targets for
development that they set themselves in their meeting.

SERVICE OF
REMEMBRANCE
Mr Gallop,
Assistant Headteacher and our four Year 10 Student Leaders, Joe Wisby, Chloe
Fowler, Rachel Millard and Ben Herbert join other local schools, The Mayor of Thornbury,
the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucester and other invited guests at the Memorial
Woodlands yesterday to commemorate service men and women who have lost their
lives since the turn of the millennium.
STUDENTS WORKING WITH ESSILOR
A group of
students from The Castle School and Marlwood School were presented with their
work and certificates at a celebratory event held at Essilor in Thornbury.
The
students spent half a day a week, over the course of six weeks, working with
experts from the company’s laboratory on the Thornbury Industrial Estate to
design and produce a telescope, microscope, spyglass, handmade specs and a
focimeter.

Mike Kirkley was joined by Thornbury Mayor Cllr Helen Harrison to present the
students with the certificates and models in front of a crowd of parents and
teachers.
This
partnership is a real success story. It embraces Essilor, the schools, parents
and the community.
ROALD DAHL
LITERACY DAY
On the
17th May, fourteen students chosen from Severn Beach and Almondsbury Primary
Schools, came to join us to help celebrate the work of Roald Dahl. Working with
some of our Year 10 students they created their entries for the Blue Peter Big
Dream Competition. In addition they rehearsed and performed some brilliant
pieces of drama based on dreams and the tricks that Mr and Mrs Twit may play on
each other at breakfast time.
All the students had
a brilliant day and came up with some excellent ideas for their dream stories
with fantastical characters and make believe lands. We look forward to
celebrating National Roald Dahl 100 Day with them on September 13th 2016.
A DAY IN
COURT!
A group of
aspiring barristers, solicitors and policemen visited Bristol for a very
special visit to the Crown Courts. Accompanied by Mrs Clark, after going
through bag and personal security, they were able to visit a court room, ask a
crown court judge questions about his role and then play the role of both jury
and witness as the judge talked them through assessing credibility of witnesses
on the stand.
The students
were then privileged to witness sentencing, bail hearing and preliminary
sentencing in the public gallery.
It was an
exciting and interesting visit which gave the students plenty to talk about as
well as witness the realities of court and the impact on families of crime.
We are hoping
this visit will run again so that more Marlwood students can benefit from this
experience.

THE QUEEN’S
90TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
Four students
and I had the pleasure of attending a service at St Mary’s Church in Thornbury
for a formal celebration of The Queen’s 90th Birthday for the whole of
Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire, with a number of dignitaries from
the two counties in attendance.
Also on the
guest list for the invite-only event were 90 residents of the county who have
reached the landmark age of 90.
Reverend Jan
van der Lely, St Mary’s vicar who led the service, described it as “an
uplifting and inspiring experience.”
The service
will feature in an episode of Songs of Praise which will be broadcast on June
12.
YOUTH
POLITICAL FORUM
More than
30 students from Castle School and Marlwood School, ranging from Year 7 all the
way to sixth form, discussed topics including the EU Referendum, Trident, and
whether prisoners should have the ability to vote, in the political forum
set-up by Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall.
Throughout
the session, the students would hear presentations and talks from guests on
their pre-selected topics, before breaking off into groups to debate the issue,
and then taking it to a ballot to vote.
“It is really impressive to see how interested these young people are,”
said Mr Hall.

Who says
employability skills are only for older children? At Charfield Primary school,
Premium Partners have been working with Year 5 and 6 students as they produce a
newspaper. They have had illustrators, photographers, journalists and even an
advertising team who have managed to sell more space than that paper had originally
allocated.
Now after
several months of writing, designing, selling advertising and editing,
Charfield Chatter is finally on the newstands! 14th April sees it in all the
editions of the Gazette newspaper. This
story was picked up by BBC Points West so there was excitement in the
playground at Charfield as this means over 46,000 people would have heard about
their newspaper.

GUINNESS
WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT
On Monday
22nd February Key Stage 3 students took part in an attempt to break the World
Record for the most people taking part in Simultaneous Literature Quizzes. This was a venture undertaken with other
schools in multiple venues.The current record was 2,679 people quizzing, but we are very excited to announce that, in news just in, a whopping 11,828 took part. That is nearly four and a half times the record we needed to beat!!

School receives the Time For Reading - Silver Award.
Marlwood
School's commitment to reading continues.
The Time For Reading scheme was set up by the Local Authority to promote
an enjoyment of reading. There were a
number of criteria the school had to meet in order to achieve this award,
needless to say we successfully met them! The benefits of a high level of
reading for our young learners are obvious and we use the Accelerated Reader
system to track our students' progress with their reading. Huge congratulations to all involved and
thanks to you as parents for supporting us from home. We have the Gold Award firmly in our sights!
